Fairytale retellings and creating new narratives with Kalynn Bayron

Episode Summary

Kalynn Bayron is a multi-talented author whose debut young adult novel Cinderella is Dead is set in a world where the legend of Cinderella controls everything. In this interview, we talk about the importance of re-writing patriarchal fairytale narratives, the importance of centring the stories of queer Black women, her journey to publication and the incredible reader responses to Cinderella is Dead. Plus, of course, her favourite musicals. Interview starts at 20 minutes.

Episode Notes

Kalynn Bayron is an author and classically trained vocalist. She grew up in Alaska, which apparently means skiing and ice-skating in PE class. She studied opera in college, trained in ballet and can play the clarinet. As if all of that isn’t talent enough, she’s recently published her debut novel, Cinderella Is Dead.
